Month 2, Day 31: Some Last-Minute Mystery Luck

March 31, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I managed to spend all but 90p of my remaining cash over the weekend. This was leaving me with just 90p for today, with a possibility of a trip to the cinema. It would be a bit crap to fail the challenge at the last hurdle, and no fun to miss an outing to the cinema. This is where the mystery comes in. This morning, I found two £2 coins wedged into a clip on my little backpack:

Where did they come from? I’ve no memory of doing this, plus I’ve watched every penny like a hawk since the beginning of February. There’s no way I could have put them there and forgot since the challenge began. Plus, I’ve worn this bag pretty much every day over the same period. Is it possible that I didn’t notice they were there and that they’ve been there for months and months? Or has someone else put them there. It’s a real mystery. Anyway, I’m adding £4 to the budget.

Saturday night it was raining and the bar was far, so I dug deep and we took a taxi. The taxi we hailed stopped a little bit up the road from us. While we were walking towards it in the rain, another taxi stopped right next to us. I decided we should continue on to the taxi we’d hailed. I thought this made me a good person, principled like. The fare was £5.  We visited a couple of drinking establishments. Rounds were cheap, as we were buying coke and surreptitiously pouring in some leftover Cuban rum. £6.30.

On Sunday, my housemate Andrew and I ventured out into Bristol to see what fun we could have for the remaining £8.10. First we visited a pub called “The Old England” in the Stokes Croft region of Bristol. It was recommended to us by two people standing outside it who beckoned us from afar. There was a woman lying on the ground drinking out of a bottle of whisky who seemed to approve of the pub. We ventured in, and were treated kindly throughout our stay. We enjoyed a pint of lager each, and some patties, for £4.20. There was a sign on the wall saying that no-one was allowed to sell drugs in the premises. I think that some of the people there must not have seen the sign. There was loud music to enjoy. I didn’t get a picture of the patties, but here’s Andrew in post-prandial bliss:

After the old england, we walked on. We decided to head to the Old Duke. You remember, the pub that is somehow named after both the Duke of Wellington and Duke Ellington. On the way we saw a dog that was in love with a traffic cone:

That dog really loved that traffic cone. I mean really loved it, in the most literal of senses. I suggested to the owner that they should get it a female friend.

£1.40 in the Old Duke for a coke. We chatted to a couple of girls outside the pub. They liked to talk about drugs, mostly about where you could buy them. Somewhat unsurpisingly, they were familiar with the Old England.

We finished up in Watershed, £1.60 for a latte. I sat facing what looks like a cupboard door in the wall, over at the far end windows. The last time I sat facing this cupboard door, Paul Merton walked out of it wearing a mis-shapen white cotton T-shirt and looking grumpy. I stared at the cupboard for some time, hoping that it would happen again, but I left disappointed.

Month 2, Day 13: Sale of the Century

March 13, 2008 · Leave a Comment

The idea in selling stuff is that I should get some money for things that have no value to me, stuff that I’ll never use again, and that in other months I would just let gather dust. In this spirit, I sold my laptop yesterday, for the princely sum of £125. It’s not been working for ages now, since I spilt a glass of water on it in my sleep. Minus the postage and the paypal, that’s £109.72 to add the budget. To celebrate, it was out for drinks to the The Woods and the Picture House, net cost £7.45. I said “to hell with poverty, give the cat a canary” and genuinely thought I was going out to whoop it up and spend some serious cash. It’s kind of embarassing that I only spent £7.45 really. I tried to end the night with a meal from the Ming Yin (it’s seriously called that), but they shut the door on my nose. Some ebay costs from last month came in £3.12.

Tonight it’s a haggis lasagne banquet with friends, share the wealth.

Month 2, Day 12: A Bargain?

March 12, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Went waitrose lurking again last night. Managed to bag two Caesar’s Salad kits for 20p. A true bargain. I’ve been a few times to Waitrose with my housemates, but there’s been little to tempt me of late. A typical waitrose “bargain” is shown below:

Beef Wellington, reduced to £4.99 from £11.99. On the face of it, that’s a great bargain, it’s less than half price. But let’s be honest, £11.99 is a ludicrous price to be spending on a ready meal, so much so that even at less than half the price, it’s still not tempting.

I have again indulged in Latte Wednesday, to the tune of £2.20. It’s nice to have a good coffee at least once a week :-)

Day 2: Some Luck, Some Bidness

February 6, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Tidied up my room after work, and managed to turn up another £1.32 scattered about in various places. Bonus! I then took my €4.72 in change, and toddled off round to see Jenny, who commented on the blog that she’d buy it. That’s £3.56 more to add to the budget. She didn’t want to buy the tv choice though, so if anyone Bristol-based is interested…

I’d left some beers at Jenny’s last time I’d been round, so I could even enjoy a lovely cold beer that I’d paid for, without it coming out of my budget.

Balance = £155.62 (+3.3%), Daily Budget = £6.76,

Day 2: First Expense

February 6, 2008 · 3 Comments

sp_a0003_wee.jpg

Last night my housemates and I enjoyed pancakes. Cost to me, zero. But to keep up my end of things I was to restock our house supply of chocolate. I went to the shops with a £2 budget for chocolate. I picked up a £1.89 bar of Dairy Milk and took it to the counter. The gods were again smiling on me, as the guy at the counter told me there was a special offer on the exact chocolate bar that I was buying. If I bought a newspaper or magazine, then I got the chocolate half price!

If I bought a broadsheet I would have wiped out my savings, and I couldn’t bring myself to buy The Sun, so I went for the 38p “tv choice”. So I saved 57p, and I’m up a tv choice!

The entire chocolate-buying episode came in 68p under budget, and I have a tv choice if anyone wants to buy it at a discount to its cover price. It’ll tell you what’s going to be on telly for a week beginning Saturday.

Balance = £150.74 (-0.9%), Daily Budget = £6.55

P.S. The Virgin Media negotiations are in stalemate. They say I owe them £57.12, I say I owe them £6. The ball’s in their court.
